Why Your Wix Plumbing Website Is Killing Your Enquiry Rate

By Alexander McVicar

Before I say anything about a plumber's website, I do one thing. I open it on my phone, on mobile data with the wifi switched off, and I count the seconds until the phone number is on screen and tappable. That is the whole test. No 40-point audit report, no jargon - just the same thing a homeowner does at half seven on a Tuesday evening with water coming through the kitchen ceiling.

Try it on your own site right now. Most sole traders are surprised by the count. And a large share of the DIY plumber sites I get sent are built on Wix, so let's talk about that honestly - because "Wix is rubbish" is the lazy version of this argument, and it is not quite true. The real problem is more specific than that, and it is fixable.

What Is Actually Wrong With a Wix Plumbing Website

The structural issue with Wix is not the design tools. It is what the platform loads before anyone sees your page. A Wix site pulls somewhere between 200KB and 400KB of JavaScript before your content appears, and there is no setting to turn that off. You did not add it, you cannot remove it, and it runs on every page view whether your visitor is on fibre broadband or one bar of 4G in a Victorian tenement.

The numbers that come out of that are not flattering. Testing across UK Wix sites in 2026 found roughly 48% failing Google's Core Web Vitals assessment outright, with mobile Largest Contentful Paint averaging around 6.8 seconds. Optimised Wix Studio builds do far better - 1.8 to 3.2 seconds on desktop, 2.5 to 4.5 on mobile - but those are sites someone has deliberately stripped back. The typical plumber's Wix site is not that. It is a template with a hero video, a testimonial slider, a booking app, a chat widget and a gallery of stock photos, all loading before the phone number does.

Why Those Seconds Cost You Jobs

Here is where it stops being a technical curiosity and starts being money. Over half of mobile users - 53% - abandon a site that takes more than three seconds to load. Going from a one second load to a three second load raises the probability of a bounce by 32%. Across the zero to five second range, conversion rate drops by roughly 4.4% for every additional second.

Now layer plumbing on top of that. Plumbing traffic is the least patient traffic on the internet. Over 90% of UK consumers use Google to find local services, most plumbing searches happen on a phone, and a meaningful share of them are people with an active leak, no hot water, or a boiler that has packed in. They are not browsing. They are going down the Google results tapping call buttons until somebody picks up. A six second load is not a slightly worse experience for that person - it is you not existing. They have already rung the next plumber on the list.

That is the bit that makes this so annoying. You never see the loss. Nobody emails to say "I would have booked you but your site took too long." The enquiry simply never happens, and you carry on assuming the site is doing its job because it looks fine on your laptop at home.

The Bit Where I Half Defend Wix

Honest opinion, and it is not the one you would expect from someone who builds plumber websites for a living: on most of the Wix sites I look at, the platform is not the biggest problem. The plumber is.

I have seen Wix sites that load in under two seconds and convert perfectly well, because whoever built them used one font, one still hero image, no widgets, and put a fat call button at the top of every page. And I have seen bespoke, hand-coded sites that are slower than that because someone bolted three tracking scripts and an auto-playing video onto them. The platform sets your ceiling. What you build with it decides whether you get anywhere near that ceiling.

Second unpopular opinion while I am at it: do not move off Wix because of SEO. Most of the "Wix is bad for SEO" advice floating around is recycled from about 2015 and it is largely out of date - Wix handles meta titles, schema, sitemaps and Google Business Profile integration perfectly adequately for a sole trader plumber who is competing against a few dozen other local plumbers, not against a national brand. The URL structure is a bit rigid and the technical control is limited, but that is not what is costing you enquiries. Speed is. Migrate for speed, not for SEO folklore.

The Three Things Actually Killing the Enquiry Rate

Whatever your site is built on, these are the three that matter, in this order.

The phone number is not a button. A number typed as text in a header, or worse, sitting in the footer, is not the same as a large tappable call button visible without scrolling. On most trade sites, adding a fixed call bar pinned to the bottom of the mobile screen lifts enquiries by 20 to 40%. That is not a redesign. That is one element.

The page is slow on a real connection. Not on your home wifi. On 4G, in someone else's house, on a three year old Android. The average mobile page across the web takes 8.6 seconds. Every second you claw back is measurable in enquiries.

There is nothing to trust in the first screen. Gas Safe number, the areas you cover, a review count, a response promise. If a nervous homeowner has to scroll to find out whether you are Gas Safe registered and whether you cover their street, a chunk of them do not scroll. I have written about the full list in the five things every plumber website needs to convert, but those three carry most of the weight.

What I Would Actually Do About It

Run the phone test first. Open your site on mobile data, count to the tappable phone number, and be honest about the number. Then run it through Google's PageSpeed Insights, which is free, and look only at the mobile score.

If you land under three seconds, leave the platform alone. Strip the slider, bin the chat widget nobody answers, swap the hero video for a still photo of your own van, and add a call bar. That is an afternoon's work and it will do more for your enquiry rate than a rebuild would.

If you are up at six or seven seconds with a stack of apps you cannot remove, you are fighting the platform rather than using it, and no amount of tidying gets you where you need to be. At that point a rebuild on something lighter is the cheaper option - and it is genuinely cheaper than most plumbers assume, which I have broken down in how much a plumber website costs in the UK. Worth knowing too that a Wix Business Elite plan runs to around £119 a month in the UK, which over a couple of years is not far off the cost of owning a fast site outright.

The Bigger Point About Where Enquiries Come From

Fixing the site stops you losing the people who already found you. It does not bring you more of them. That is the other half of the problem, and it is the half most plumbers never touch - they optimise the website, then keep buying the same shared leads as every other plumber in the postcode.

The lane nobody is in is public planning data. Every approved extension and loft conversion in your area sits in a council portal, months before that homeowner has Googled a single plumber, and Planning Leads pulls those into a weekly digest with a letter template ready to personalise. A fast website and a lead source your competitors are not using is a genuinely strong combination. A slow website and shared lead-gen is the expensive way round.

One last thing on the generic platforms while we are here. Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy's builder are all designed to sell one product to every business on earth - a florist, a gym, a consultancy and a plumber all get the same box of parts. They are not wrong for that; it is just that none of them were ever shaped around how a sole trader plumbing business actually wins work. That is the gap we build into.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wix bad for plumbers specifically?

Not inherently, but it is a poor fit for the kind of traffic plumbers get. Plumbing visitors are overwhelmingly on mobile, often mid-emergency, and abandon quickly. Wix's unavoidable code overhead pushes typical mobile load times past the three second mark where over half of those visitors leave, which hurts a plumber more than it hurts most businesses.

Can I make my Wix plumbing website faster without rebuilding it?

Often yes, and it is worth trying first. Remove the testimonial slider, any chat widget, auto-playing video and unused apps, compress your images, and cut down to one or two fonts. That combination usually takes seconds off the load time. If you are still over five seconds afterwards, the platform overhead is the limit and tidying will not fix it.

How do I check how fast my plumbing website really is?

Use Google PageSpeed Insights - it is free and takes about a minute - and look only at the mobile score, not the desktop one. Then do the real-world version: open the site on your phone with wifi off and time how long until you can tap the phone number. Under three seconds is the target.

Will moving off Wix hurt my Google ranking?

Not if the move is done properly with the old URLs redirected to the new ones. Rankings usually wobble for a couple of weeks and settle. In most cases a faster site recovers and improves, because page speed on mobile is a ranking factor in its own right as well as a conversion one.

How much does a proper plumber website cost compared to Wix?

A Wix plan runs from roughly £9 a month up to about £119 a month for the top tier, before any paid apps. A one-off built site you own outright starts at £595 with no monthly fee, or £795 plus £49 a month fully managed. Over two or three years the gap is much smaller than most plumbers expect.

If the phone test on your own site came back at five or six seconds, that is not a design preference - it is enquiries walking away every week without telling you. We build plumber websites that load fast on a real phone signal, put a tappable call button on every screen, and put the trust signals where a nervous homeowner actually sees them. One-off from £595, or fully managed. Tell us about your business and we will come back with a scope and a fixed price within one working day: plumberproai.co.uk/website-enquiry
