Why Plumbers Lose Jobs on Mobile (And How to Check Yours)

By Alexander McVicar

Two numbers, and then I'll explain why they matter more to a plumber than to almost any other trade.

53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than three seconds to load. The average web page takes 8.6 seconds on mobile. Not the worst pages - the average. Among the top 100 sites in the world, the average is still 8.6 seconds.

Now add the bit that's specific to you. Roughly six in ten UK plumbing searches happen on a phone, and the urgent ones are higher than that, because nobody with water coming through a ceiling goes to find a laptop. So the slowest version of your website is the one almost all your best customers see, usually on mobile data rather than wifi, usually while something is going wrong in their house.

I built a website checker for plumbers last month that pulls mobile speed from Google's own PageSpeed test, and the spread across real plumbing sites is wider than you'd think. Some load in under two seconds. Plenty take six or more. The ones taking six are losing over half their visitors before anything appears on screen.

What slow actually costs you

Bounce rate by load time is well documented: pages loading in under a second lose about 30.8% of visitors, pages taking three to six seconds lose 49.3%. Mobile bounces worse than desktop across the board - 56.8% against 50%.

So here's a conservative model. Say 200 people a month reach your site on a phone, and 8% of the ones who stay make contact. Average job £450.

Mobile load timeVisitors who bounceOf 200, how many stayEnquiries at 8%Monthly value
Under 1 second30.8%13811£2,475
3 to 6 seconds49.3%1018£1,800

That gap is £675 a month, or £8,100 a year, between a fast site and an average one. Same traffic. Same adverts. Same you. The only difference is how long the page takes to appear.

And for what it's worth, Google found that a 0.1 second improvement in mobile speed lifted retail conversions by 8.4%. A tenth of a second. That's how sensitive people are on a phone.

The five-minute test

You don't need a developer to find out where you stand. Four checks, in order of how much they'll tell you.

1. Turn the wifi off

Open your own website on your phone with wifi switched off, on 4G, standing outside. This is the single most revealing thing most plumbers never do - everyone tests their site on wifi at home, where it feels fine. Your customers are on mobile data in a corridor. Count the seconds out loud until you can see your phone number. If you get past three, you have a problem.

2. The one-thumb test

Hold the phone in one hand, as somebody holds a phone when their other hand is holding a bucket. Can you reach the phone number and tap it without shifting your grip or scrolling? If the number is in a hamburger menu, or it's text you have to copy out, the answer is no.

3. Google's own PageSpeed test

Go to pagespeed.web.dev, paste your address, pick Mobile. It gives you a performance score out of 100 and tells you when the first content appears. Under 2.5 seconds is the target. This is the same data Google itself uses, so there's no arguing with it.

4. Our checker, for the plumbing-specific bits

Speed is only half of it. Our free plumber website checker runs the same Google speed test and then looks at the things a generic tool ignores - whether your number is tappable and near the top, whether your Gas Safe registration is visible, whether you say anything about out-of-hours work. Takes about twenty seconds and there's no email gate.

What's usually making it slow

In my experience it's nearly always the same three things, in this order.

Enormous images. A photo straight off a phone camera is three or four megabytes. Put five of those on a homepage and you're asking someone on 4G to download a small film before they can ring you. Properly sized and compressed, those same photos are a tenth of the size and look identical on a phone screen.

Builder bloat. Wix, Squarespace and GoDaddy templates load a lot of code to make the editor work, and your visitors pay for it in load time. We went into this in why your Wix plumbing website is killing your enquiry rate.

Things you forgot you installed. A chat widget you never answer, two analytics tags, a review carousel pulling from a third party, a cookie banner script, a font loading from somewhere else. Each one is a separate request before your page finishes.

The thing I'd fix before speed

Here's where I'll disagree with most of the web-performance advice you'll read: for a plumber, a slow site with the phone number at the very top beats a fast site where the number is buried.

Speed is a multiplier, not the product. If your page loads in 1.2 seconds and the visitor still can't work out how to ring you in one tap, you've optimised the wrong thing beautifully. I'd take four seconds and an obvious tap-to-call button over two seconds and a hamburger menu every single time. Get the number right first, then make it fast - in that order, because that's the order a panicking customer experiences it.

When I audited eight emergency plumber websites a few weeks back, three of them had the phone number buried somewhere down the page. Those three had bigger problems than their load time.

What the best plumbing sites do on mobile

They're built mobile-first rather than shrunk down from a desktop design. Number and Gas Safe registration in the first screenful, as text. Images sized for a phone. No chat widget nobody answers. And they're honest about what happens out of hours, because the mobile visitor at 10pm is the one most likely to be in trouble and least likely to wait.

I run Plumber Pro AI from Glasgow, and the reason we build only for plumbers is exactly this kind of detail - a general web designer optimises for how a site looks in a portfolio, on a big screen, in good light. Nobody books a plumber in those conditions. That's what our website design for plumbers is built around. More on what converts in the plumber website that books jobs.

Frequently asked questions

How fast should a plumbing website load on mobile?

Under 2.5 seconds, and ideally faster. 53% of mobile visitors abandon a site that takes more than three seconds, so every second past that is costing you enquiries you never hear about.

How do I check if my plumbing website is mobile friendly?

Open it on your phone with wifi off, time how long until your number appears, and try to tap that number using one thumb. Then run it through pagespeed.web.dev on the Mobile setting for Google's own score.

Why is my plumbing website slow on phones?

Usually oversized images straight off a camera, the extra code that website builders load, and accumulated third-party scripts - chat widgets, analytics, review carousels, external fonts. Images are nearly always the biggest single cause.

Does mobile speed affect my Google ranking?

Yes. Google ranks on the mobile version of your site and uses page experience signals including load speed. But the bigger cost is the visitors who leave before they see anything, which happens whether or not you rank well.

Is a mobile-friendly site the same as a fast one?

No, and this trips plumbers up. Mobile friendly means it fits the screen. Fast means it arrives quickly. A site can scale perfectly and still take seven seconds, and you'll still lose the job.

If you take one thing from this: go outside, turn your wifi off, and open your own website on your phone. Count the seconds. That's the experience you're giving the person whose kitchen is flooding. If it's not quick, and the number isn't under your thumb when it arrives, we build fast, mobile-first websites for UK plumbers from £595 one-off or £49 a month managed - sized for a phone on mobile data, number and Gas Safe registration up top, with an optional AI triage system that catches your after-hours enquiries and texts you the emergencies. Tell us about your business at plumberproai.co.uk/website-enquiry and we'll come back with a scope and a fixed price within one working day.

Want a plumber website that actually books jobs?

We build fast, mobile-first websites for UK sole trader plumbers - built to turn Google searches into booked jobs, with an optional after-hours triage system. One-off builds or fully managed.
